GASSERTIME!!

Sometime in 1967 the police in the city of Norrköping, Sweden, found a small convertible in a parking lot. The car had been left there by a man who had moved back to Austria after some years. The car had newer received Swedish plates so the car was sent of to the scrap heap. But the little VW was saved by a drag racer called "Lars". He was looking for a lightweight body for his GASSER project, the VW fitted the bill perfectly. It received a 600hp Mustang 427 Cobra Jet engine and a Ford rear axle, to further improve weight to power ratio a pair of fibreglass rear fenders and a Fiberglas front end. And a functional but hideous air scoop in the front with the headers straight out of the side panels. The driver position was moved to the center in the rear and the windscreen was removed. The whole lot was then painted in purple. The performance was reported to be a respectable 3 second 0-100km/h but I don't know the best ET's.

These pictures are from Start & Speed and from the private archives of "Lars" and Willy Berg. Scanned and provided by Oystein Asphjell.

GASSERTIME!!

What we recognise now, is that the car the Police found on the parking lot was in fact a Heb' !

It's pretty easy to see in this otherwise sooo cool photo. note the molded rear bumper and the cage... cool in a non purist way!

GASSERTIME!!

The obvious question that comes to mind is, WHERE is it today...?? This is where the story takes a turn for the worse... "Lars" stopped racing the car in 1970 and sometime later he sold of the engine. The remains was crushed by a digger and buried in a landfill. Before you bring out your shuffles, "Lars" built his garage over the spot. And take it form me, he is FED UP by VW enthusiasts calling and asking about the car... he WILL hang up on you!

The summer is too short!!

The guys throwing Le Bug Show decided on a date today...  26-27th of August...  that's the same date as for Scandinavian Cal-look Classic. To bad, I will not like to miss the gratest show on earth... but I will have to. On the other hand I DO like the serious racing and the wheelies at SCC so it's not all bad news...! How a about a caravan down to DDD the weekend after??

Norways first looker??

I just received some really cool pictures of what might very well be Norway's first Cal-looker. Øystein Lindahl got hold of some early HotVWs magazines in the early eighties... and he liked what he saw. He told me that you really had to search a little in the magazines to find the 'lookers those days...  hey, you still have too... ;-)

Norways first looker??

Øystein changed the front fenders to 68 and welded up the pumper holes to get that oh-so-cool US look! This one would turn heads even today!

Norways first looker??

Under the one-year only lid you would have found a tuned 1600. Notice the shorter pipes?

Kormi lives as he learns... his type 3 is used all year round... on 14" fuchs it seems...

While this car is cool, what you really want to see is inside the barn in front of it...  but I think it's kind of a Friday-secret...hohohoooo!

The "Kobus asks and Norway answers" series.

It gave it's life for a realy early oval 53. The roof replaced the oval roof, making a fake switter. The fake switter now belongs to Anders Letmolie.

The "Kobus asks and Norway answers" series.

"Where's this car today???? judging by the vespa sign in the back it was somewhere in the early 80's in Italy!!!"  Kobus

The answer is a s sad one ...  the car lived in Norway up to the eighties. This pictrure is taken in Oslo, hours before the picture above.

Thanks for the old and all the best wishes for the new!!

The era of the gassers seem more and more like ancient history for every year that passes, but at the same time it's closing in too...  just think about it, there are more and more cars being resurrected from the dead...  and imported from the states too...  just the other night I witnessed the first cuts in a shell here in Norway...  one roofshop more coming up... strange car to... had some weird holes in front of the doors.... ;-)  All this can only mean one thing... the Seventies are returning!!  BTW check out the tires the Lowry's are using in this picture... is that a low profile or what??

Have a good new years eve everyone, and I hope I'll see you all in 2006!

Guess who has returned from the crusades!

Look closely at the sexy lines under that rug... The mysterious Empi Crusader, always partly hidden in photos...

It's all about to change...

UPDATE!! Guess who has returned from the crusades!

Rune asked the other day, "Were are all these cars (Empi) today?" Well....Chassis #002 AKA the Empi CRUSADER is sitting in a race shop, ready to race!!

YES, THIS THE RED ONE IN THE PICTURE ABOVE! THE REAL DEAL!!

Never raced, it just sat in Economotors showroom until the whole company was sold.

Apparently it has just been restored and is now ready for a season of racing in the CVAR series! You think it's lost and gone, but it turns out it's better than ever!

Guess who has returned from the crusades!

It's been modernised, and it's in incredible condition...  What can you expect from a race car more then 30 years old?? ...this by far exceeds it!
